Lágafell Church - Jón Páll Sigmarsson's Grave (Mosfellsbær, Iceland)

We did a little Strongman tour while visiting Iceland and took a trip to see Jón Páll Sigmarsson's Grave site. It's only a few miles north of Reykjavik in a town called Mosfellsbær. There is actually a nice little hike beside the church with great views of the landscape nearby! I highly recommend it!

Jón Páll Sigmarsson (28 April 1960 – 16 January 1993) was an Icelandic strongman, powerlifter and bodybuilder who was the first man to win the World's Strongest Man four times. He is regarded as one of the greatest strongmen of all time, and is credited with developing Iceland's national identity. He was named Icelandic Sportsperson of the Year in 1981, and was one of the best-known Icelandic athletes. In 2012, Jón Páll was inducted into the World's Strongest Man Hall of Fame.

Beautiful country, beautiful man. Jón Páll is like Freddie Mercury. They were the best at what they did, and (now) decades later, they are still sorely missed. They are the benchmark in their chosen fields with skill, dedication and a popular showmanship.

Because of him and Sigur Rós, I had wanted to visit Iceland for many years. I did in 2016 and although I didn’t visit his grave, he was in my thoughts.
