.In Australia you pay a 2% levy on your taxable income.And because everyone, except people with an income of less than something like $27k, who pay nothing, pays into the scheme. So it is insurance where as in all insurance, everything is paid out of the pool of Medicare Levy.But there are no co-pays or other costs like US medical insurance..The cost of Insurance company administrations which is about 18% of the healthcare budget in the US, go away. There's huge savings there. Pharmaceutical companies must negotiate drug prices with the govt. If agreement can't be found, the govt. sources generic products. And the market is so large, the companies can't afford to stay out of the system. It's really very simple. 2% is very cheap insurance for a system that covers ALL medical situations, from simple stitches to heart transplants. All paid from the 2% levy.. Doctors can choose to opt in or out of the system. Most choose to be in the system. It's so damn simple by comparison with all these insane "bills " presented by the Republicans. Even with the ACA, many are still not covered. In our system, everyone is covered .and it comes in way cheaper than what you have now, where millions still aren't covered. Here, you go to the doctor, present your Medicare card, receive your treatment and leave. The doctor then sends the acct. to Medicare., end of story. Another advantage is that the doctor decides on your treatment, not someone in an Insurance office.
