As soon as you declare a war your success chance falls drastically! This is how paradox tried to address this scheme. It is still possible but it got a lot harder after there nerf.

this is the oldest trick in ck series.
we had it in crusaders king 2 too.
also hou need to savescum so if you fail and hou don't have a army that couldnt hold against enemy forces, you basically die.

the funniest thing is that this IS already nerfed. back when CK3 first came out you can kidnap people while you were at war with them and the chances were pretty high now it's pretty difficult

I prefer a slight variation. I kidnap the heir, then declare war on the target when the scheme is at 99%. With just a couple days the ruler dies, the heir in my prison assumes the throne, and I win the war.

The best part about it is that it’s highly repeatable because I don’t have to wait for a war cooldown, it causes instability in the rival kingdom making future kidnappings and assassinations easier, and it’s more reliable than kidnapping a ruler who has more protection and you can’t declare war on a ruler whose already in your dungeon.

I love this trick! I roleplay my character and their heirs by their traits (makes the game so much better since you’re not running the same meta plays) and in the AGOT mod, the primary heir manipulated his father into pressing his claim on the Reach and win the war and became the lord of the Reach after his death. Became best friends with the king and moved up to spymaster of the court and became recognized as the legitimate house of the Reach. Then somehow I think, through and old marriage, got a claim on the Riverlands. Took it and controlled most of the Seven kingdoms and claimed the throne when the king died and his son took over. Created the faction after making friends with the other high lords who joined and pressed my claim as I was plotting to kidnap the king. The war started and won instantly after successfully kidnapping the king and became the king of the Iron throne in one lifetime. Was super fun!

TLDR: Did this in AGOT CK3 and became king of the iron throne do recommend!

This is how I united Ireland and survived the vikings in 867 start date, by building my guy with high intrigue and schemer trait and then just mass kidnapping damn viking after damn viking that kept invading me. It's super cheesy but also super effective, I had two kidnap plots with ~90% success chance running at the same time all the time.

this game seems like it would be so difficult for me but i love the anno 1800 feel of it

Wish they'd make this harder to do - something like them getting a 'Well-Guarded' bonus, for when you declare war

it was nerfed after game release, no?

As Alfred the Great I had an end of run scenario where 15000 vikings were about to siege my castle. Sent my army around them and siege their capital, took Jarl Ivar captive within a month of sieging. Safe to say he was swiftly executed and the war was over lol

that was patched so the chance of kidnapping someone you are at war, while not impossible, is incredibly reduced.

I have recently gotten into CK3 again, though through the Elder Kings 2 mod which transforms the game into a fight for Tamriel instead of Europa. My favorite race in Elder Scrolls is the Breton and they start out with one of the intrigue trees fully unlocked (except for the title) and now I am tempted to start a new save to reck havoc with this! XD

In real life If a captured king tried to surrender his lands, especially when they were way stronger, some Duke or pretender would rise up and depose him in abstentia. Then probably come and crush you anyway. So it's definitely unrealistic cheese.
