Comparing Trump and Biden’s Foreign Policy (Made Simple)

This is not a repeat of 2020! This video will give you the comprehensive yet simple breakdown of the different foreign policy agendas between the Biden and Trump administration. The video will look at three different areas of particular concern: China, Russia and then the rest of the world.

Importantly, in this video I aim to be as non-partisan as possible (being Aussie helps) and declare my biases early on. The video also covers all sorts of prominent players in global foreign policy such as Zelinsky, Boris Johnson, Assad and Kim Jong-Un.

Good to see the Aussie boys give perspectives on America. The politics in here in Australia are so different that I feel like its easier to look in without bias.

Overall I prefer Trump’s foreign policy, but he had probably the most inconsistent foreign policy of any American president in decades. His administration was torn between varying strategies based off of his advisors and cabinet, as well as just his own fairly inconsistent whims. This has its advantages, I’ve seen some people say that they support Trump because of him being an isolationist leader who got America out of its forever wars abroad and helped avoid a new Cold War, but I’ve seen just as many people talk about how he finally was the leader to get tough on China and defeat terrorists abroad.

He could go rapidly from stuff that I support like getting troops out of Syria and decreasing tensions with North Korea to increasing the US military presence in Afghanistan and killing Soleimani pretty inconsistently, and wasn’t as much a unified ‘Trump doctrine’ as much as there was erratic movement between people in his administration who were realists like Bannon or Flynn, and neoconservatives like John Bolton or other Trump allies like Tom Cotton. The trend was exemplified by groups outside of his administration like strongly anti-Iranian Israeli lobbyists and Trump’s own indecisiveness. He was never able to really chart a notably coherent foreign policy course, which basically means that whether you support Trump’s foreign policy or not depends on if you interpret it in a way that you approve.

I have never heard Mr. Mitchell espousing anything but fact & common sense interpretation (s) of political history. What a shame that our media organisations don't have the same dedication, committment to truth and knowlege like Mr. Mitchell, I for sure will be supporting you on Patreon and I seriously urge everyone to the get the word out!

You deserve the patreon money just for that Nord VPN gag. Also is the Ki Adi Mundi inclusion because of Jake Sullivan's big forehead?

Your videos are outstanding! With little to no bias, just facts and confirmed information. Keep going and do not mess that up like many do!

Would have been nice if you also included how trump threatened to leave nato and made Nato look vulnerable in his term or how china and iran felt threatened by trump during his last months in office and even were worried about a nuclear strike from the US - you can watch the intervie from US Gen. milley on those worries.

Much more could be said about each's foreign policy. I however prefer Biden's foreign policy (though it of course it will never be perfect). Trump's America First agenda soured relations with America's allies, there was a sense of disunity among NATO and other American-friendly countries. Trump was disapproved of in most of those countries, but Biden was instead more approved of in those countries. The reason why is Biden, in both policy and rhetoric, emphasised the need of allies. This confidence, combined with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has boosted NATO unity when it seemed to be in doubt among the Trump administration. Though I think Trump's criticism that some NATO countries aren't paying their fair share militarily speaking has good merit, this was combined with his general policy of America First, a more nationalistic and unilateral approach to foreign policy. Biden differed in his emphasis in mostly multilateralism and reengaging with traditional democratic allies, which I think is the right approach to the expansionist authoritarianism emanating from Russia and China.

That being said, though I think Trump is one of the top 10 worst US presidents, there were some moments where I think he did well in foreign policy and were, in my opinion, his best moments. This is in regards to his talks with North Korea. A US president crossing the DMZ was history-making and very optimistic moment, I think Trump handled it superbly well - very presidential, in contrast to his unorthodox and manic style. Unfortunately, and let's not forget this, the talks didn't amount to anything more significant in regards to denuclearisation. North Korea continues to have these weapons, and it seems like people were caught up in the optimism of the DMZ crossing and just the fact that there were talks in the first place, rather than an agreement on denuclearisation. Nonetheless, it was a step in the right direction, and apart from the talks, Trump handled those history-making moments there very well. And then everyone collectively forgot about the whole thing and acted like everything was normal amusingly enough.

So yeah, Biden is preferable. Unity and good relations with allies is important, and I think Biden recognises that more so than Trump does.

I as a nonAmerican actually share your view on funny Trump. When Trump had a foreign policy plan he actually seemed very appealing.
But I started to sour on him when he became tariff-happy. Tariffs are always a band aid measure in my opinion. I’m not a great Biden fan but I have to give him credit for actually trying to execute a proper strategy. But I also am not pleased with his over reliance on sanctions. Clearly sanctions are not as effective as American foreign policy makers had hoped they’d be. (Look at Cuba and Venezuela for example. They can be extremely damaging but not fatal.) Biden also majorly blundered the situation with Saudi Arabia.
That being said I think the whole Russia-Gate thing made life very difficult for Trump in that regard. I think he had a proper Russia strategy until he realised that it would be political suicide to go through with it.

7:48 in my opinion the correct call the Iran nuclear deal was basically only a means to temporarily delay the Iranians from developing nuclear weapons they still would have done it and I can guarantee it would have headed straight to Israel

7:35 I think the criticism is less directed towards the country in question but more to the party or individual who decided to take the money
