Quilty Co. Clare

Показать описание
Some video I took in the town of Quilty, Co. Clare on Ireland's Altantic Coast.
The story goes that in 1907 a French three-masted sailing freighter, the Leon XIII, foundered in a gale in the bay seen in the clip. All seemed lost for the ship and crew until, risking their lives, local fishermen went into the stormy sea in their currachs (small open canoes). They reached the wreck and managed to bring the crew safely ashore.
The church featured here was built in 1911 from funds raised in recognition of the Leon XIII rescue and today its round tower is visible for miles around.
