As others have said, it's peer and parental pressure: different people and even the media are always telling you to do different things.
Considering the kid in the MV is asian/chinese, yet in a predominately white/american school, he is also fighting against two societies. In asian culture, white skin is considered more beautiful and there are many brightening skin products on the market....yet in american, tan skin is highlighted and many people get tans and wear bronzer/contouring makeup.
Asian culture circles around food and plates are regularly refilled (in Cantonese/Mandarin, they would often ask "have you eaten yet?"), yet in american culture, diets and being skinny (think about models which is considered a standard of beauty) are being pushed in the media.
The kid stood out naturally because of his parents and their background, but because he didn't fit in in his own school, he started to change cause he either wanted to (to make friends), or felt he had to (to avoid being picked on).
Sometimes it feels like there are only two choices...to rebel/stand out or to join everyone/fit in....but in the end, you should do what feels right to you, what you want to do, and be who you really are, whatever side that may lead you on. You won't stand out all the time, but you won't fit in all the time either.
