Good question! I can still recall vividly that Jimmy Carter announced the U.S. terminated its diplomatic ties with Taiwan without any warning! All the Taiwanese were appalled by the sudden announcement. Many of Taiwan's friends around the world were also shocked. "My God! What a great American president!" they couldn't believe their eyes when they heard the news on television. On second thought, we learned that Carter was just a farmer without much formal education. What did he really know about diplomacy? When he was elected president of the United States, he seemed to show his displeasure over dictators, including Taiwan's Chiang Ching-guo, Chiang Kai-shek's son. I still don't know if Carter knew that Chiang Ching-guo was the one who decided that "Taiwan has put an end to
dictatorship." Meanwhile, he picked Lee Dang-hui, a well-educated Taiwanese government official who got a doctoral degree from Stanford University to be his successor and paved
the way for presidential, gubernatorial and mayoralty elections on Taiwan. He exhorted Lee: "You need to tolerate the oppositions again, again and again!" But after Carter's unexpected termination of U.S. diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, every Taiwanese started hating Carter, including the oppositions. Besides, millions and millions around the world started realizing that they could not trust America! Soon, more and more people began calling Carter an SOB.
