Admittedly I am a boomer. But did I hear that right? The “child“ is a senior in high school? And his mother is “protecting” him.
Sweet Jesus. It’s no wonder these guys live at home for the rest of their lives. That is the tragedy, not the history that young man might learn.

'Beloved' is a very intense and painful read. I was assigned it in high school, as well, and I am forever grateful I was because it's some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read.

And if the kid can't handle the book, he better not listen to the news ... that will really traumatise him.

My heart sank, not sunk. She could profit from a refresher English course.

If that woman thinks Beloved is too explicit for a high school senior, she should also ban her son from reading or listening to anything said by Trump---such as his "grab 'em by the video. She must keep her son so sheltered that the only mass media he consumes is G-rated Disney movies, unless they're too shocking for him as well.

I also heard a report that the high school senior reading Beloved was in an AP level class ... which is awarded college credit ... so it's a college level reading book.

History isn't there for "comfort".
Most history isn't "nice"....

History is there to teach us a lesson, in order to avoid making the same mistake(s).

Accuracy & truthfulness is imperative. 💯

A senior can't read BELOVED. But could die in a war.

Beloved is such an important text and it’s disgusting that anyone thinks this book, or any other shouldn’t be banned. I also hate that people cover up blatant racism, sexism, and all kinds of other crap that spews hate, by saying they’re just a concerned parent. Give me a break.

It's really sad that a high school senior, in advanced placement, doesn't know the basic history of this country. What happens in Beloved is not unique.

If this woman thinks Beloved is bad she should try reading the bible.

As a high school senior why is his mother vetting his reading material? That's creepy as hell.

Virginians don't want to go down the same road that Texans are going down under the oppressive rule of the TexasTaliban. Vote 💙

History isn't nice. That's why we are supposed to learn from it. Shielding your children from reality is actually doing them a great disservice.

It was quite possibly my least favorite book we read in high school. Still shouldn’t be banned. Crazy fragile babies

"Explicit materials" to conservatives are books that talk about slavery being bad and the holocaust being bad.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. THATS EXPLICIT

Kids see, hear and do worse just by watching TikTok, social media and listening to other kids. Let's stop "the book burning".

Note the use of the word 'explicit' in the ad. By NOT naming the book in question, it leaves it wide open as to what was brought home. It's probable most people would think of sexual activity first. But the point is, once again, freedom fighters who are book burners and want to censor discussion in classrooms have ZERO credibility.

As a high school English teacher, I have had a parent tell me she didn’t want her son to read the memoir Night because she didn’t like how “bitter” he was after his experience in the Holocaust and she wondered why we couldn’t read a more uplifting book about the Holocaust. She also went on to say she didn’t like that we were going to read Fahrenheit 451 or Romeo and Juliet. She suggested that we only read happy books like The Adventures if Tom Sawyer. I was gobsmacked by her comments. School is meant to expand students’ horizons, to teach them that there are other experiences and points of view outside of their own. Beloved is a beautiful book and everyone should read it!

Fun fact: lies are a strategy that apparently works in the U.S.
