Gravitas Plus with WION's Palki Sharma | India takes pride in its Guru-Shishya Parampara. It takes pride in being home to great teachers like Guru Dronacharya and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. But have teachers in India lost the respect they once commanded? Has learning become a business? Who is to be blamed for it?

Unqualified teachers are also the problem in India.

I really like the contents that WION brings day by day and also the way of expressing each point related with that topic.

If schools don't employ quality teachers, students will automatically turn to other sources, no use cribbing

Well in Germany, South Korean and other developed nations the cost of living is way higher than India, so it's obvious that the basic pay of teachers in developed nations will be higher than India which is a developing nation. For eg living in India will be 65.2% cheaper than living in South Korea so obviously South Korean teachers will automatically get more money than their Indian counterparts

The private school teachers are working very hard but getting pay ranging from ₹ 5000 to ₹ 20, 000. Infact, in many states, private teachers are earning less than the daily wage earners.

Krishna told Dronacharya before he died in the battlefield of kurukshetra that "You and your students might consider you the greatest teacher there ever was but in reality you are not a guru. Gurudakshina is something to be given by students to their gurus as a token of appreciation for training them, a loving gesture to thank their teachers. You turned this pure gesture into a business transaction and at that moment you were stripped of the title of guru. Had you been a guru, you would have trained eklavya, Had you been a guru, you would have trained Karna, Had you been a guru, this war would never have happened."

But I think that we should not compere our teachers from forain teacher, our government teachers get enough salary. 60000 is enough to live in India Rather i think private teachers don't get enough salary. And there are many defect in our teachers and education system, Right now salary is not such a big problem. 🌈

The story of Dronacharya is a classic example of how teacher should not behave...he was very biased.

You showed govt. teachers' salary mam,
I am a private teacher.
A private teachers' average salary must be 10000 rs, may be less than 10 k. My school has staff of 12 out of which 9 teachers get less than 8000 rs.

I am a retired Australian university senior lecturer and I totally concur with Palki’s excellent report.
I fear many commentators have become sidetracked by salary comparisons and totally missed her message.
When teaching, especially at primary and secondary levels, morphs into a money-making ‘industry’ whose focus and yardstick is simply the attainment of examinations, then the essential life skills of communication, critical thinking, imagination, innovation, etc are dulled and eventually lost. My long experience of Australian and New Zealand tertiary entrants is that as the primary and secondary levels teaching ‘profession’ has been gradually industrialised by—among other ways—(relatively) lowering teachers salaries, the quality of pupils’ education falls correspondingly. Teaching, especially as the primary and secondary levels, must be regarded as one of any society’s essential vocations—and remunerated as such.
My respects to all Indian teachers. 🙏
