When allotment planning we use a simple crop rotation suitable for beginners or experienced allotment holders. If you are a new allotment holder then these tips will help you set out where to plant and how to plan an allotment. We have explained a crop rotation for the allotment but a similar plan could be used at home in a vegetable garden.

Allotment gardening and planning can be loosely followed as we never have rigid plans that cannot be adapted on the allotment garden. We grow food with a rotation to allow the soil to recover nutrients and to reduce diseases. A healthy allotment has a simple rotation of crop each year.

If you are a new allotment holder then you will need to plan around the food groups that you wish to grow and like to eat. The planning can be fun but don't forget to get planting as the season has begun.

If you are aiming for self sufficiency then you will need to plan an allotment as we do for continually harvesting food to eat. We can grow and harvest food every month of the year with a good plan. To become self sufficient you will be growing your own food and eating seasonally. Both very good things for your health and that of the planet.

Thanks, I'm still thinking about how I'm going to deal with crop rotation on my raised bed allotment plot. Sited rhubarb on the north end of the plot so they won't be moved, but I expect to do a lot of interplanting to make best use of the available space, it's going to be a conundrum to deal with. :) Not a problem at home in the back garden as there are three raised beds and various borders which can be easily crop rotated, but the 30 x 6.5 ft raised bed at the allotment is more of a challenge. Could divide it into 3 areas but then interplanting root and leaf crops poses a dilemma lol.
