LFS on an Intel i486 Episode 1 - Setup and Configuration

Показать описание
This is a project to document the building of Linux From Scratch 8.4 on an Intel 80486 processor in 64 MB of memory.

Why do this? There are several reasons:

1. The main reason is personal. Using a Linux system built directly on 486 architecture means that I can use that LFS image as a seed for booting any x86 PC to build LFS (or possibly others such as Gentoo) to take advantage of the new machine’s CPU architecture. It also means I don’t have to worry about cross compiling and the potential risk that invalid code may be produced. This is also the reason why I am building using the fastest Intel 486 CPU ever made, and not one of the faster AMD CPUs.

NOTE: There is no audio with any of the videos in this project.

Hi Kernotex;
I have Linux Mint version 5 Running on my Dell Computer, so for now I will use that to build my LFS system, it would still have to be transferred to my 586 machine, that way I will have 386 code for first buildup of LFS.. Which I hope to use as my base code on the 586 machine..
HAVE a Good Day, THANK YOU Marty

Hi Kernotex;
I won't be able to use Linux Mint ver 5.0 or any other up to Linux Mint 17.. As the version of Foxfire is too Old that comes with these Versions and they won't connect to the Internet..
So, I have as a Host Linux Mint 17.3, I have updated it and upgraded it, so, now I have to decide which version of LFS do I want to Implement that will eventually be on my 586 machine.. Any Help or suggestions would be gladly accepted.. Have a Good Day..
THANK YOU Marty

Hi Kernotex;
Well, I basically found the problem, When it is compiling GCC it uses -V and -qversion, well the Version of Linux Mint that it is using, uses the later rules, the -V is now -v and -qversion is eliminated.. So I need to try either 17.1 or further back and see if Linux Mint version 15 will work, I know Linux Mint version 13 will not work because of Internet problems.. I will need to research this better and see what version of Glibc uses the old rules.. Have a good Day..

Hi Kernotex;
Thank You for Your Reply..
Unless, I come across a major Roadblock my plan and what I am using is LFS 7.10, Then once that works I will use that as my Host and upgrade to LFS 8.4, assuming that it will still support 386 Instructions.. I have been having problems with getting first pass GCC to work/compile, after about a half an hour it upchucks, for these for now I am using my Dual Core Dell machine, which it sees it as a dual 686.. I think I have found my problem, so I will try it once more, if that will not succeed, then I will go to CLFS as per Your Suggestion.. Is CLFS any different than plain old LFS ?? I will need to see if there is any Video's on it for me to follow..
THANK YOU and have a Good Day Marty

You should add the amount of memory you have on the machine.
