I have a fiskars hatchet that I use for splitting small pieces like that. If it doesn't split all the way through, I just hit the back of the hatchet head with another small piece of wood. Works every time

I have this thing and I love it. Great to singlehandedly lessen the size of too big chunks, which otherwise are too small to split with a larger twohanded splitter axe. A bit dangerous tho; normally you place firewood at a knee-high stump or whatever, to use a twohanded axe - but if you use the same short stump with this thing, you're more likely to strike yourself by acident since you are bending down and using only one hand. My tactic is to place another stump atop the original stump and make it taller, say, so that you strike the log at more or less waist-high.

Ok well either I don’t know what I’m doing when using higher end hatchets but I used to use a crappy no name hatchet from Home Depot and wanted to upgrade so I got this and the fiskars x7...both bounce right off of the logs I’m trying to cut. I can’t event get them to sink into any wood...thoughts?

I have a sily ono and have used it plenty for splitting wood for camping but its not great for that. I just bought this significnatly cheaper hatchet but it looks way better for that purpose. I am probably going to bring both to test them out but having the right tool for the job is important and I dont think its worth spending $250 on a hatchet for splitting dried wood when camping. I would still go for my ono when backpacking however. Thanks for the review, it helped me decide to get it.

$28? 😳
It’s “on sale” for $44 now on Amazon, which is around the same price as my local Home Depot and Lowe’s have it.

If you’re worried about it, slipping out of hand. Paracord tied right in front of the handle . Forward lanyard.
