Civilians trapped in Ukraine's Donbas as key bridge destroyed

Russia has destroyed the last bridge out of Severodonetsk - one that connects it with neighbouring Lysychansk.
Both cities are at the heart of the battle for Ukraine's Donbas region.
Many civilians are now trapped.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports from Kyiv.

1. Ukraine had mined the bridge. 2. One panel was dropped, it was not destroyed. 3. River is low as summer is here, so tanks can likely just drive across. 4. Trees from the forest can be dropped in the river to cross if needed.

The residential city is held by the Russians. Ukraineans are holding the industrial plant and use civillians as human shields just like they did on Azov Stal in Mariupol. Bargaining chips.

These civilians should’ve been on the other side of the country by now.

The harsh reality is Russia is enjoying bumper revenue from their fossil fuel (plus others like grains etc) export which was ironically fuelled by inflation due to the prolonged conflict. The western world will prefer a quick end to the conflict as their own domestic economy suffer. To prolong the war, they have nothing to gain and much pain to endure. That’s why they have not fully delivered on their weapon pledge.
As NATO meet next week, Ukrainians are left wondering if they can truly rely on western support. Last year, the Afghans found out the hard way. The Taiwanese should take US support with a pinch of salt.
I predict NATO will ask Ukraine to sue for peace by ceding lands and other Putin’s terms. In the financial world, that’s called getting a haircut.
