What is the Bioengineered Food labeling law?

Starting Jan. 1, 2022, certain foods containing GMOs will need to make a Bioengineered Food (BE) disclosure. This BE labeling law is the federal government’s way of addressing the public’s cries for GMO labeling. However, the rule won't apply to all GMOs -- leaving shoppers, like you, in the dark about whether or not you’re buying products made with GMOs. Why does the verified project who make money from licensing logos, charge extra for foods that have "high-risk" ingredients but still allow the logo to be licensed? How is it GMO if there is not any detectable GMO in the product? Why does the Non-GMO Project advertise "marketability" and sales numbers than any actual proof of safety being increased? Why do scientists claim GMO's are the future of food and are safe?

GMO's have been in our food since 1970's. Bioengineered food has got to mean something else.

The non-GMO Project would be useful for avoiding all GMOs, but it has two unfortunate defects.

First, it is useless if you want to avoid only specific GMOs but not others. Some people might sensibly decide that there is no danger from eating animals who were fed GMO food, since the animals' digestive processes would break down these foods. Others might think that the bioengineered foods without any detectable GMO materials were OK. Some consumers might decide that rather small amounts of some GMO are OK with them. Some might think that added vitamins are OK. Some might think that GMOs that protect a plant from diseases are OK. Some might only want to avoid the glyphosate tolerant foods. Whatever your personal preferences, the non-GMO project is useful to you only if you agree 100% with their rather inflexible standards.

The other problem goes in exactly the other direction. They license their icon for foods for which the icon does you no good whatsoever, because there is no alternative GMO in the market. This is common with foods like lettuce, olives, wheat, peanut oil, most spices, etc. So you may be avoiding foods that you don't need to avoid. They even license their butterfly icon to some food products without any genetics at all, like bottled water and like salt.
