this video should be called how to pick a crenshaw at the grocery store and not out of your garden. pick the heirloom crenshaw anywhere from a complete lime green to half yellow. a blossom end that gives with pressure is the tell tale sign as mentioned but it gives"on the vine way before completely yellow.

Just grew my first Crenshaw melon in my garden this year. Harvested my first melon yesterday and cut it open this morning. The flavor was amazing, sweet and the flesh juicy

I grew crenshaws last season in Las Vegas.  None of them turned yellow like that, and were ripe and delicious with green outsides. *shrug*

I am growing Crenshaw Melons. Your piece was especially helpful. I wanted to know when to harvest. They are in the white exterior stage. I assume I should wait until they are orange or gold. I got the seed from a melon purchased in the store produce department. It was so good I save seed from it. Thanks!

Thankyou! I had heard of them and thought that I remembered hearing good things so picked up a pack of seeds. Then...nothing much about them on YouTube. So have been winging it as far as growing it. The pollinators finally did their thing and it looks like I will have crenshaws this year!

I like to refer to the Crenshaw as the Queen Of Melons (with the Watermelon being the king). Without a doubt, the crenshaw at its best is the sweetest and best melon there is.

The problem is, though, that when you buy them in the supermarket, many times they have been picked too soon and gassed to give them color. And then they are flavorless.

just got a crenshaw and it was bright yellow and had some give to it. I sliced it open and it smelled amazing!! But then was disappointed by blandness and lack of sweetness... Was this melon too ripe? Any suggestions?

Since filming the Crenshaw video I have been introduced to some other varieties of Creshaws.  I guessing you had one of those other varieties.  You generally don't seem them at the grocery store, but they are offered much more at Farmer's Markets and local fruit stands.  I'm glad that turned out for you.  Melons love the desert, so you should plant more this year!

I found these seeds earlier this year and thought this would have been interesting fruit to grow. I am anxiously awaiting them to actually get ripe. I successfully have grown for one I had to throw over the hill it was rotting and one I brought in the house just to check to see what it was supposed to look like on the inside when it was right. It appears to still be a little underripe because it just started turning orange on the inside. And after tasting it yes it is not ripe. I just hope the next two I have in the garden will ripen so I can actually enjoy them. Can you show the best way to grow these?
