I remember when playing the call with Cthulhu RPG. Our group was very very careful about looking at Eldritch beings. It got to the point that to get over sanity loss we would drink very very heavily on top of the corpses of things that should not exist. Just doing anything not to get a good look at them.

A big part of things like Cthulhu is that it's not seeing something big that's scary, it's comprehending something incomprehensible for a mere fraction of a second. Understanding something indescribable, seeing something unseeable, temporarily knowing something you weren't supposed to know and can't possibly recall is a big part of what makes them terrifying.
