I’m glad Shannon brought up how much it means to be “slapped”- definitely a cultural thing. In my culture, slapping someone across the face or spitting at you is the sign of ultimate disrespect because it’s done with intention and for the other person to not just get hit but know they are lower. So will smith didn’t just slap Chris rock. When he did that his message was, “you are beneath me”

Will, thru his own decisions and life choices, has lost the respect of many,
as a man. To regain that sense of himself, he has taken part of another
man's dignity. This act makes him less in my eyes...not greater. This
was a shameful act and an embarrassment. Will could have simply stood
up, looked sternly, pointed at Chris and said STOP!.... That would have
been enough, and it would have been respected and powerful.
