Bushcraft: Crusader cookset, test, and Meths burner mod

A review of the crusader cookset, I show my meths burner mod for it. Compare it to Greenheat. Show my home made woodgas stove and give a warning about fire!!

Yes I made a similar burner in a shoe polish tin but it would not burn for long enough. I now use a tinned salmon tin which is twice as deep and the boot polish tin lid fits it near enough. Never got on with Greenheat or Firedragon gel but have used a coiled length of fire rope with meths in the burner, which is okay. Nicely informative video - thanks for posting.

Yes they are a good bit of kit, not the cheapest available but probably one of the most robust, breaking a crusader would take some doing :)

It's also called Asbestos rope. It's the rope that is used to seal doors on central heating boilers. You should be able to get it in any good DIY store.

Great video. Have the crusader and have added fire rope to the burner and use it with meths. Love the homemade woodgas stove.

Understood, I work in this sector and know now what you are getting at.It will be a fireproof fibre now as actual asbestos is highly dangerous and banned, but the stuff was/is used as gasket between pipes, and to seal boiler/firehole doors.This will make a difference I bet?.cheers for that.

just made the stove i used a the smaller tea strainer which fits perfect in the tin no cutting took about ten mins to make and about 8mins later first brew of what i think will be many, ,,,its a brill idea cheers mate

Ive been looking at cook systems like this for a trip to Brazil, I didnt want to take anything complicated or too bispoke. A freind of mine has one of these and has had the same problem as you. Great vid, thanks for the information..

I recommend the stainless steel crusader lid rather than the plastic one. You can purchase one from Ray Mears shop online.

I've used GreenHeat and I think it needs to 'breathe' for a minute or two before It will easily take a spark. Nice idea with the shoe polish...Might have to try that one, thanks.

Love that shoe polish tin burner and that wood gas stove was really great. Similar to the SOLO stove but nowhere as expensive. Thanks fore sharing great job.

Great modification with the polish tin, going to give that a go I currently coil cotton rope in the bottom and then add fuel, after use you are left with char cloth rope (if you know what I mean) cheers peace always bob

Ive heard quite a few negative reports now on the greenheat gel, so I'd stick with your polish tin burner (Which is great by the way). Liking the woodgas stove too. Great video Duane... And Im jealous of your fire pit...

Sadly no... we are shopping for decorative paving slabs and plants tomorrow...no fire pits... However, I will be getting a free standing fire pit, so thats a bonus !

I made a wood gas stove almost identical to yours but just couldnt get it to work, whats the gap between the walls of yours?I think mine was too narrow to get a good gas flow.
