Although often overshadowed by prominent male figures of the era, the story of the Duke family during the Gilded Age adds a fascinating layer to this period of American history.

Their rise began with a tobacco empire that not only rivaled but sometimes surpassed the fortunes of the most notorious industrial magnates of the time, expanding into textiles and electric power and establishing a legacy of significant influence.

At the heart of this legacy was Doris Duke, the last heiress of the Duke dynasty.

Doris inherited not only an immense fortune but also the complex responsibilities that came with such wealth.

Her life, characterized by luxury, philanthropy, and public scrutiny, illustrates the challenges and opportunities faced by a woman at the helm of a significant legacy during a transformative period in American society.

In today's episode, we explore the full saga of Doris Duke, from her luxurious beginnings to her involvement in one of history's most controversial inheritance cases.

We'll delve into her life as "the richest girl in the world" and how she managed and multiplied her inheritance through savvy investments and a keen interest in arts and architecture.

Doris Duke's story begins with an empire built on the golden leaves of tobacco, a fortune handed down by her industrious father, James Buchanan Duke.

Her inheritance was not just financial; it included the vast Duke Farms, her principal residence in New Jersey.

This estate was transformed under her guidance into a lush paradise showcasing her horticultural passion within the renowned Duke Gardens.

Her affinity for the arts was reflected in her residences, each a testament to her luxurious lifestyle and varied interests. Shangri La, her home in Honolulu, displayed her fascination with Islamic culture, housing intricate mosaics and antiquities.

Meanwhile, her Newport mansion, Rough Point, echoed the Gilded Age's opulence, and her Manhattan penthouses served as both homes and hubs for managing her empire.

Doris's passion wasn't confined to static beauty; her art collections included masterpieces by Picasso and Van Gogh and her wine collection featured over two thousand rare bottles.

Her philanthropic efforts were equally diverse, focusing on the arts, medical research, and historical preservation, reflecting her multifaceted persona and the breadth of her interests.

Despite her vast wealth and the opportunities it provided, Doris faced significant challenges, including the high expectations and public scrutiny that came with her inheritance.

Her personal life was marked by high-profile relationships and marriages that often ended in public and controversial breakups. However, her enduring impact is evident in her lasting contributions to cultural and environmental causes.

Doris Duke's legacy is a testament to her ability to navigate the complexities of immense wealth and public attention while making significant contributions to society. Her story is not just one of wealth and privilege but also of resilience and dedication to improving the world around her.

I work for an engineering company and years ago we worked on her estate, stabilizing the historic buildings. My boss told me that the gigantic commercial- scale kitchen had 3 walk-in freezers, two for food and drink and one dedicated solely to her fur coats.

So far, of all the women in this series, Duke is one of most fascinating and sympathetic. I wouldn't trust her butler with a nickel.

How about saying that she got away with murder because she could buy unscrupulous people with her money😮

It doesn't matter how much money you have, or give to charities etc. If you die without accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord, you will spend eternity in hell.
