No other music makes me so emotional than this Overture. Not only at the incredible genius of a 17 y.o., but because its magic keeps a steady musical climax with themes weaving throughout and progressing until the last note.

For well over 150 years. No17 yr old can archive what Felix Mendelssohn has so far.I only started counting how many white keys on the piano at 17 !

thank goodness for inspiration such as this. Untouchable, still, in these modern times. The good old days were just that.

It's a shame that men like him, who really know how to make music, will never be born again

Felix Mendelssohn...I also agree that he is highly under rated as a composer. Not only do I love this piece of music, but also first piece I ever heard...the beautiful "Fingal's Cave Overture" and the one and only Oratorio, "Elijah!" Such a wonderful piece of music to hear and to sing! I know that he converted to Christianity at some point in his life from being Jewish. Those of you who have sung "Elijah" know what I am writing about...a beautiful and exciting work to sing again and again and again. I heard "Midsummer Night's Dream" when I was a young child and fell in love with it. So sad that he died so what he could have accomplished had he lived longer!!!

Brilliant composer! And his sister Fanny too. Too bad he died so young. Way beyond his time!

Fascinating that the music and the play have nothing to do with each other and are separated by several centuries

seeing in the comments that this guy wrote this at age 17 truly gives me some inspiration to compose even more now as im just one year younger than him when he wrote this
