Modi's BJP steers clear as Kashmir votes in Indian election | DW News

People in Indian-controlled Kashmir are casting their ballots as the fourth phase of India's parliamentary elections begins.

Voting is being held in the region for the first time since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government stripped Kashmir of its semi-autonomous status in 2019.

Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party isn't running any candidates in the area.

The decision to bring the Muslim-majority region under direct rule was deeply unpopular among residents - and some are choosing to boycott the vote.

Control of Kashmir is disputed between India and Pakistan, who have fought two wars over the territory. An ongoing decades-long separatist insurgency has left tens of thousands dead in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

What an approach...

When Kashmiri people did not vote – Kashmiri people are angry with the government and hence are not voting.

When Kashmiri people vote - Kashmiri people are angry with the government, that is why they are voting. 😊

You’re talking only about one side so be neutral because today’s Kashmir is far far better than 90s Kashmir .

Anti-nationals will always be there in every country. Lets see if common people succeed in joining mainstream India OR they still remain under shadow of terror. Choice is in their hands. And isn't that a true democracy?!

if 95% kashmiri are talking about to go with India but 5% are radical - foreign media will be more interested on that 5%.
they always try to show kashmir as a 2nd gaza . Even PO kashmir people are protesting for merger with India- But foreign media will never see that.
1st kashmir now they are trying to push khalistanis - all these forces have been promoted by western countries .
West always do something to keep Asia busy - to maintain their power .

In rest of India, DW is concerned about minority but in Indian Kashmir they are concerned about majority. They made a documentry about Pakistan minority in Sindh but then for some reason removed it from YouTube.

This is unbiased journalism.

Such companies should be booted out of India. These western companies will report from India, criticise India and then give bad ranking in press freedom index.
