Trying to FORCE a Breakaway With Attacks (Criterium Race Breakdown)

In the Cat 2/3 tri-valley Criterium race, I tried REALLY hard to force a breakaway to succeed. I had the idea to EMPTY THE TANK, which means I wanted to either win or get dropped. So I attacked 6 times in total and did force a break to get away.

The breakaway though, had lots of guys plus 3 of them were from the same team (MIKES BIKES). And by the time the break stuck, I was SMASHED. So I wasn't able to do a whole to make moves against the breakaway

I try to explain my thoughts as I attack and force a move that can put me in a position to win. Hope You Enjoy.

Why don't you do some climbing road racing? Seems like its fits your power profile better.

VC, thanks for sharing and displaying the determination to "Empty the Tank" with the knowledge that you had another race immediately after that. Great vid!!! #critwhit

Love it. Set a goal and stick to it. There’s a lot of comments about how you should have conserved your energy better, but that’s not what you went in to this race trying to do. It did seem like for a couple of your bridging attempts or attacks, you didn’t fully know what your goal was; were you tying to initiate others to contribute, trying to bring the group together, trying to bridge solo? Sometimes I find that if you’re in a small group that’s stagnating, you just need to take a solid pull to show others that the group is still willing to work. If you go to hard, but not hard enough for a clean break, it can encourage others to sit in even more. Keep up the great work. You’re looking strong this year!

6:52 Noticing that your attack begins with a super high cadence push above 130rpm and then you seem to come down the cassette once you’re up to speed. Is that typical?

Anytime I’m in a sprint situation I find myself wanting to get in a smaller sprocket to crank hard and then when I’ve burnt the match I’m easing off with an up shift or two. Is this a personal fast vs. slow twitch
preference, or do you think one method just makes more sense from an efficiency stand point?

Really enjoy these older crit videos of yours btw. Thanks

bro - when you attack, don’t start from the front of the pack and/or zoom right by the pack!! way too easy for everyone to latch on. wind up from the back (if not off the back a little), so that when you come by them it’s too fast for anyone to react. and go to the other side of the road.

i think you have more watts to spray than me, but you gotta spray ‘em right!

tough position to be in without teammates for sure. good for you for racing your bike instead of just watching the race unfold in front of you.

Hey Tyler, after watching all of your videos I've been wondering why Michael David Winery don't have better representation in these races....are they running on a tiny budget? Smaller team? Located elsewhere in Cali? Mike's Bikes, Terun etc all seem well represented...just wondering how it works?

You guys should come up to Canada with 25 km winds lol that is a serious hustle to race. Summer is hot and humid but wind is ridiculous for racing as you get your butt kicked just by the Wind. You did alright here just watch the wind direction as you may get slowed down due to diagonal wind. You should of attacked on the right side of the group to be protected against cross wind as you move up the group line. It is much easier to race with a team obviously as you can reserve a large amount of energy for the last few km's.

Man crits in America have Nice roads. Here in the Netherlands we often have very narrow streets with speed bumps and sometimes even semi cobbled sections.

Great stuff @VC. Keep it going. Hope to see no other cyclist in front of you on the finish line next time.
