How Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Works

Показать описание
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD or PIGD) is the genetic profiling of embryos prior to implantation (as a form of embryo profiling), and sometimes even of oocytes prior to fertilization.

MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT:
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
PGD helps to prevent passing of particular inherited condition in their family to their children.
It helps to prevent the birth of a child with a serious genetic condition, like cystic fibrosis.
PGD is used with one or both parents has a known genetic abnormality.
During PGD makeup of embryos is verified.
Thus PGD is also referee as embryo screening.
PGD is a procedure used prior to implantation of embryos in mother’s womb.
The embryos used in PGD are usually created during IVF & ICSI.
Who can benefit from PGD ?
Infertile couples with recurrent IVF failures.
Women trying to conceive with advanced age.
Parents with chromosomal abnormalities.
AIM of PGD
AIM of PGD Is to prevent known genetic disorders in children.
These could include
Cystic fibrosis: affects the lungs, pancreas, liver and intestine like cystic fibrosis.
Triploidy:Three copies of each chromosome
Thalassemia: Causes weakening and destruction of red blood cells
Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Causes muscle degeneration.
How is PGD performed ?
PGD begins with IVF treatment, followed by genetic screening.
During IVF eggs are harvested and fertilised by sperm in the lab to form zygote.
The zygotes continue developing for 3 days, until they typically reach 8-cell stage.
At this point process known as embryo biopsy is performed.
In embryo biopsy one or two embryo’s cell is extracted.
The cells are genetically screened.
Healthy embryos that are free from particular genetic condition are finally transplanted to uterus.
Ethics
Aim of PGD is to prevent genetic disorders to be passed to child not to create perfect tailor-made babies.
