GFCI's are required in damp or wet locations like kitchens, bathrooms, basements, garages and outdoor outlets. They are used as one of the permissible ways the NEC allows the millions of homes built before the late 60's that do not have the 3rd wire ground. The 1st outlet on the circuit is found and replaced with a GFCI, but check the instructions to see what number of downstream outlets it will protect, some might be 5 others could be 7. It may not detect a ground fault at the end of a long circuit. Also they come with labels reading GFCI PROTECTED OUTLET and NO EQUIPMENT GROUND to be put on each outlet.

The load of the GFCI is only used with non GFCI on the same circuit?

Also I used to work in renovation of hotels which the all plug ends were to be changed every 10 years

Then you want to place a sticker on the receptacles downstream that says GFCI protected

If you accidentally reverse the line and load wires, will any outlets have power including the GFCI outlet? Just curious for troubleshooting.

So my aunt's house is old and she have those 2 prong outlets and i have changed all of them with gfci outlets even thou its not grounded. I used the line sides only to replaced them all. Is it bad? 😅 im tired of using those adaptors just to use and connects like microwave ovens and some other electronics that comes with 3 plugs.

The term “Down stream:”. Anywhere else on same circuit? Can you have two GFIs on one circuit? I ask because I have a GFI not easily accessible under my sink, deep in a corner. Can I place another GFI on that same circuit? THANKS

It says right on the back which side goes to the breaker and which side goes to the outlets. I guess if you can’t read, it might be confusing.

You can also add wires to the openings for load if you don’t want the outlets “downstream” to be protected by the GFCI outlet.
More than 3 decades doing electrical work. You’re welcome
