Welcome back to another idioms video, my name is Thomas.
And our first idiom for today is, “blow off some steam.”
When you blow off some steam, what does that mean?
Well, are you blowing steam off of somebody?
No, that’s not what it means.
In an idiom sense of the form, it means, that you are relieving your stress in whatever way is best for you.
So maybe you’re screaming somewhere at the top of your lungs, Ahhhhh right? Or maybe you’re exercising or you’re working out so that you relieve the stress to feel better.
Right, everybody has their way of getting rid of stress. In my example we have: John went outside to blow off some steam.
Right, and that is our example for, “Blow off some steam.”
And our second idiom for today is, “to blow smoke.”
When you blow smoke in something, right, it blocks something so you can’t see thru that smoke right?
What does it mean as an idiom?
It means to talk big and make people believe that you’re good at something, when possibly you probably are not.
Right, so in our example we have, “He wanted everyone to think he was the best, but I think he was just blowing smoke.”
So basically, he wants everybody to think he’s the best, but this person thinks that he was just talking big when actually he could not or probably was not the best.
And our last idiom for today is, “busting your balls.”
What does that mean?
Well at a farm usually, the cow’s(bulls) balls, usually a male to make them a steer.
Right, but the actual idiom means, again is,” are you joking with me?” basically.
Right, so in our example we have, John saying, I quit drinking yesterday.
And maybe John is a big drinker, he drinks all the time.
Alex just drank with him last week.
So Alex saying, “Are you busting my balls?”
Are you kidding me?
Are you serious?
This is what he is implying.
