Implants are used in many aspects of plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery. But in initial or primary rhinoplasty, it's uncommon to use synthetic implants to contour the nose. Instead, during rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty, we will typically use grafts and cartilage that's taken from the patient's own body, most commonly from the septum.

The septum is the partition that separates the left side of the nose from the right side of the nose. Oftentimes we'll use some of that cartilage from the septum to help shape the nose or to help build up the bridge. This is really not an implant in the sense of being a synthetic implant, instead we would call this a graft that is harvested and carved and placed to help contour the nose.

Oftentimes, in primary rhinoplasty, meaning patients that have not had rhinoplasty before, oftentimes in primary rhinoplasty, we will use the cartilage that we take from the nose at the time of septoplasty, not only to structure and contour the bridge of the nose, but oftentimes we'll use it to help build up the airway, support the airway and actually give structural support to the nose so that we can achieve a well-defined and long-lasting result.
