Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who spent 16 years in prison for crimes against humanity, has died at the age of 86 in Lima. His children announced his death on social media. Fujimori, who led Peru from 1990 to 2000, had been released on humanitarian grounds after serving two-thirds of his 25-year sentence. He was convicted for massacres committed by army death squads in 1991 and 1992, which killed 25 people, including a child. His rule was also marked by a brutal war against leftist rebels, which resulted in over 69,000 deaths. Fujimori’s health had deteriorated following treatment for tongue cancer.
