I lived in Beijing at the time. I had no idea about this movie. A guy was selling VCD copies of it on the street, I bought it. I watched it and at the time I was amazed. I let so many people borrow the VCDs.

We're too used to modern spoil-fest trailers where you see a 2:30 synopsis of the whole plot to a de-tuned pop song soundtrack. This is miles better because you get some spectacle but all the surprises are in the movie itself.

It took me a while, because having seen the movie the trailer and TV spots look really spoiler-y. But I remember now that, at the time, we all thought "The Matrix" was a virtual world Keanu Reeves was trying to enter.
SPOILER ALERT:

But NO! The movie is all about him _leaving_ the Matrix!
