Hi Feng, if you're still taking suggestions for what to do in real time, I'd really appreciate seeing your process for cleaning up a line drawing and bringing it to a "presentation or final". You've blazed through them in earlier episodes, but I'd love to see it slowed down and hear your brain as you complete it. I'm referencing those "super tight" line drawings that are so rare in portfolios.

Thanks a ton!

As usual. Another fantastic episode Feng. Covered a lot of ground. But what I did notice is your shirt. I recognize that typeface. It's the San Miguel beer logo. I'm half Filipino and my eye went straight to it. LOL! Would love to meet you one day. Maybe at the next CGC. Thanks for what you do and thank you for what you have done for my career. I still brag about the Gnomon DVDs you came out with years ago. It was a jumping point for me. I couldn't be more happier with how things turned out. But like you said time and again there is tremendous time needed to cultivate these skills. I'm still learning to this day. Never stops. Student of the game.

Well, at first, just by looking at the title, i was feeling like there was something wrong about it, but i have to admit a agrre with most of the vid. Working as a designer on 3d animated series for the past ten years, i can tell how helpfull it is to master 3d tools. Not only as a way of communicating your ideas and making sure sub-contractors are not going to mess up with these, but also because there's a creative aspect about these 3d models. Let's say you want to iterate a mech design from a soccerball, or a crate from a space filling volumes. 3d will save huge amouhnts of time to get a feasable design, as it is not possible to cheat much. Now i'm a simple designer, but in the field of 3d animated series, sometimes, the creation is done directly in HD 3d. Why you may ask? Well, teams shrunk with time, and now, if the budget is too low, there's no way for the director to change your design as long as it fits his initial intentions. Making it into 3d as early as possible serves several purposes: Storyboarders can use it as is by importing the 3d file, and if the director has nothing to say about it, it stays as is. The sub contractors will be happy, and instead of asking to them modifications on the 3d mesh so that it matches the 2d reference, you'll be able to ask them to improve the hi -res, which will result in a much better product. Now, this only works inside a team in which, 'including the director, can trust each other, and have descent skills and understanding over the subject matter. But the technical part isn't the whole thing. Fractal design is way longer to explore using 2d rather than 3d. Now did you say VR? VR is all about space! 2d can capture a mood, but can it be as precise as 3d? nope. So my advice, especially to those who fear 3d: Do not fear it! That's a tool. You are designers, and you want things to be perfect? Master it, that's tedious, but it will get better. And that's so rewarding! good luck to all of you and mtfbwy!

Feng, this is one of those question you can just save for another Q&A episode since i believe the answer is quite complicated, but here it goes.
I'm 20 years old, finished high school in 19 years, that's the usual age here. I've been drawing +- since when i was 17 years old and spend most of my free time like that, it was only when i finished high school that i started spending 10+ hours daily. For a while i lived from money i've made from part time works when i was still in school. So i had no job and no education, but loads of free time which i really used well in my opinion. Now i've got a part time job to pay my parents for staying and insurance and you know, the question about money and future is showing up. I'm quite adaptive, my branch would be environments and creature design, i'm even learning 3D in maya and i'm thinking about blender/zbrush as well, but you know, all this is starting to feel a bit like a thing for the chosen ones. Kind of like much worse artist than me already got a job in a studio and yet so many good artist got none, i'm sitting there in between those two groups and kinda nervous, i'm willing to sacrifice everything if i know my work will pay of one day and that is quite what i am doing right now, but this thing has been bugging me for a while now, projecting negatively on my productivity as well. Is it possible there is just too much good artists nowadays that the industry can't just accept them all? If that is so, i believe i should find a full time work, instead of just part time and give it like 5 hours a day instead of all my free time as i do now. I can't just put any more of my precious years into a dream that might be so out of reach.
Ps. of course i love spending time drawing that's just fun stuff, not that much learning tho, that feels like work and that means that when i'm not working for money, i'm working for free in the comfort of my wheelchair, but for free nonetheless so it's very, very draining.
Love your channel btw, you're doing great favor for us all.

Can we get a video of you showing this process for a concept?

Could you do a video on sketchup? Since its a free tool the viewers could use as well and it would be interesting to see how you use it

Great Video Feng! I can totally see why some guys freak out, I used to be one of them, but I incorporate 3d into my concept stuff, it saves me a bunch of time and allows me to change designs super quick. However there are always times when i need to just paint in photoshop as its so much quicker. For example ive been doing some designs for our VR arm, I came up with some thumbnail concepts of the base style, color shape, our 3D artist then used that to make a base model, then I took that base model and did a bunch of paint-overs, the team then picked one they liked, then it goes back to the modeller for a high poly model version. As Feng said, 3D is just another tool to come up with the final design.

Thank you so much for making that video. It explained a lot of what I misunderstood in the last episode.
If there is even more basic knowledge in terms of industry standards you are able to wrap up in a video that you haven't done in the past, I would really love to watch this.
You are really killing it with the amount of effort you are putting in these videos. Thank you very much again.
