Nintendo. Beloved video game company. Safe. Warm. Nurturing.

For anyone who has played video games, this Japanese company has a very special place in our hearts. Gamers of all ages get nostalgic thinking about that first time playing Mario, Donkey Kong, or Zelda. But what if I told you that this company has a much, much darker history.

That’s right, much like Disney and movies, once you push past Nintendo’s family-friendly image, the company’s practices start to paint a different picture. From their treatment of their own employees, to destroying the communities who play their games, it becomes quickly apparent that Nintendo, the billion dollar corporation that defined your childhood, isn’t the fatherly figure they make themselves out to be. Today, we’ll be exploring some of the unethical things that Nintendo has done over the years, and present a different angle of this beloved developer.

This is the dark side of Nintendo

Also nobody talks about that verification of eshop games/dlcs thing .
Like they sell harware with portable gaming as a major argument but you can't play it on the go without wifi ... despite paying physical price ...on a PORTABLE console .
This is the kind of shit that would not exist when Iwata was here .
I miss him .

The terrible treatment they give their fans, yet those same fans will fight tooth and nail to defend it. Crazy.

0:14 Correction: The GAMES they make have a special place in my heart. Nintendo as a company itself, does not. Very important distinction.

On the subject of forced labor there are worthwhile articles, including by the Human Rights Watch, that state the issue with foreign companies and their auditing procedure.

Primarily, there is nothing stopping these factories or sweatshops from hiding children during an investigation into child labor. Same can go for other violations, like forced labor, since the management knows in advance how and when there will be an investigation.

The conclusion to be drawn here is that the parent companies' investigation is not to probe deep and find the truth. It is to offer plausible denial. "Not on my watch" really means "as long as we dont see it when the boys come through, it's not our responsibility." This puts the burden of proof on the bolder sort of journalist who will risk - potentially their life - to expose a problem that we know exists in the first place, and we can only get a glimpse of its prevalence.

In other words, assume its everpresent in production in underdeveloped sections of the world. And you'd also be right to assume that enterprises of these larger countries that own these factories wont truly investigate the problem unless there is a risk of a PR disaster.

Did you know that, despite Nintendo's hostility towards modding, homebrew, and rom hacking, you can mod your 3DS?
It's surprisingly easy to do.

I stopped supporting Nintendo a long time ago. Now I buy their games used and have never felt guilt playing their sh*t on an emulator.

This is why I love SEGA where they actually encourage their fans to make fan games, heck even praising their fans for making fanart, fan games, and fan films

Remember when video games were just fun? Now it's the same cost as your apartment rent.

A month ago, I committed the most abhorrent sin according to Nintendo's eyes.

I pirated and emulated GameCube games on Dolphin.

And did not feel guilty.

At all.

It's genuinely tragic that a company which has produced so many brilliantly-conceptualized games with such innovative and creative ideas is so shit in basically every area beyond game design itself.

Watching Nintendo try to tackle piracy and modding is truly among the most hilarious events of this generation.

Nothing about their behavior during the 80's? Demanding 3 year exclusivity for any game released on NES, preventing retailers from slashing prices on games...

The worst part in that process is their clients that surprisingly love to lose their savings and their dignity

Rule of thumb with big multi-national gaming companies: There are always a few good actors that make everything better, but the corporate folks are demons.

No company is on your side. They will only be on your side (temporarily) if you pay them or you run it.
