Is it too late for the US to contain China? | The Bottom Line

Is it futile to resist China’s superpower status? Is it time for the United States to live with it?

Depending on the answer, the world could be heading towards more stability – or chaos.

Kishore Mahbubani was a Singaporean diplomat for more than 30 years and served as president of the United Nations Security Council. He tells host Steve Clemons that the US should get accustomed to a multipolar world it can no longer dominate.

Mahbubani argues that the "Asian century" has already begun and that Washington should not allow issues such as Taiwan to ruin their relations.

Contain? What an evil thought of containing others. Jealousy is poisonous.

Chinese always have a saying “harmony bring wealth”, compare to USA “my way or the high way”. This is a fundamental different between these 2 countries, and it leads to a very different foreign policy for these 2 countries.

Question is, can US contain and control itself, insted of making trouble everywhere?

Why should China be "contained" by any other country? This is such a disgusting topic.

The world is not for any one country to contain another country. It’s an absurd and utterly selfish concept of winner wins all. Losers plan containment but true winners talk about competition and cooperation.

China is playing civilization while the U.S. is playing call of duty.😐

It is interesting why American's media talk like a judge of other countries. No other countries talk about how US should behave.

The U.S. has also invaded or bombed dozens of countries and supported nearly every single right-wing dictatorship in the world since the end of World War II. It has overthrown or attempted to overthrow dozens of foreign governments since 1949 and has actively sought to crush nearly every single people’s liberation movement over that same period. It has also meddled in scores of elections, in countries that are allies and adversaries alike. Forcing other countries to “adopt there so called American values .”

Now American problem is they lost industrial base, and they have nothing to trade except weapons and overprinted money. I'm glad i had liquidated most of my major assets on the financial market at premium price before i call bad investment! The problem with the US economy today is that they underestimated China. Also, i agree with peter from the comments that the world is not for anyone to contain.

China's main interest is trade - hence the Silk Road and BRICS. The US's main interest is global military/economic hegemony.

Only weak empires try to contain others, but always fail

Missing the big picture. USA is not a democracy it's a corporate autocracy ruled by the big corporates. Global interests are not about good will between people rather about where profits are to be made.

BRICS wants to build a new currency. It is also worth noting that gold has historically been used as a store of value and a means of exchange, and some countries still hold significant amounts of gold in their reserves. However, it is unclear how a new currency backed by gold would function in the current global financial system and whether it would gain widespread acceptance. Ultimately, any decision to create a new currency would be subiect to numerous economic, political, and logistical considerations.
