Small, but perfectly formed, straight out of Castle Building 101!
Ogmore Castle is a Grade I listed castle ruin located near Bridgend
in Glamorgan, South Wales. It guards a major fording place into
southern Wales.
The Normans made their claim to this area as early as 1116, when William de Londres established the first castle (a ringwork or motte) at the site.
Ogmore was one of three castles built in the area in the early 12th century, the others being Coity Castle and Newcastle Castle. It was in use until the 19th century for a range of purposes, including a
court of justice and a prison, but is now a substantial set of remains and a local landmark.
Today Ogmore Castle commands 52 stepping-stones across the ford of Ewenny and Ogmore rivers. These stones were built for the
convenience of a love-stricken girl who lived in the castle. Her lover lived across the river at Merthyr Mawr, and their tryst was impeded by tides and floods. The stepping-stones accomplished their purpose. The lovers married in July 1233.
