►► Download my FREE mixing guide here...

This short vid shows you how to tighten and fatten the low end of your mix without making it muddy, as well as showing you how to get your bass line sounding big on ANY system.

The video covers these 4 main points:

1. Tuning your kick to the root note of your track.
2. Fattening and widening the bass (without killing the power).
3. Carving the EQ.
4. Buss processing.

I’m doing the course i just came here because at module Five when i compared my mix with your same tracks mix, your low end was Superior 🤩✌️. Thank you for your way to explain everything so easy ! You are a great teacher, direct to the point!! And English it’s not my first Language 🙌

One thing that I think is important to add is that the tuning of the kick in this demonstration isn’t always applicable. If you want your bassline to be more prominent in the subs, and you are applying less of a high pass to your bass, (and in which case more so to your kick) you don’t want the kick to be the fundamental as the tone of the kick, or the thump will clash. If you have a track that has a more prominent sub in the bassline, then you want the kick to be in key, but not on the fundamental, a third, forth, or fifth (above) is usually the answer in this case. Totally material dependant but important to consider. You can do the fundamental in this case as well but the kick needs to be quite heavily high passed which can lead to a lot less impact. The most important thing is to learn how to decipher whether the track is oriented to the kick or bass being more prominent and how to work around each scenario, which is difficult because it’a sometimes subjective, and very much based on the material. Can be a very common amateur mistake.

Hey Will, ROYALÈ here. I gotta say you’ve helped me over the last 4 years of my producing career. Your tips took my sound design to a whole different level. Even some got signed to flashover recordings, years ago. Working my way to Aramda ❤ cheers mate. Your advice always encourages me to never stop learning.

Will I appreciate and admire you and want nothing more than your success. This is why I am telling you that I have unsubscribed from your mailing list simply because your pushing your products too strong and it gets bordering spam at times.
I want your growth and this is why I wanted to give you this feedback. I think the emails need to tone down on the mailing frequency/subject lines.
And as always, keep doing what you're doing. I have published 2 tracks because of you & am so glad I found your channel!! ❤️❤️❤️

I appreciate you for NOT pausing in between clips where you’re trying to show the before and after. A lot of times in other tutorials it’s harder to hear the changes because they pause for 3 seconds 🤷🏻‍♂️ and then go “before- pause 3 seconds, after”

Thanks for the video! I really like the technics described here. My only concern is the audible distortion heard in a moment you add a compressor.
I really think viewers should take their time to learn about sine waves addition and subtraction, as it really makes a huge difference in the low end.
For example:
- If kick and bass are a bit off phase, it will result in a weird looking waveform. It'll ruin the bass eventually.
- If you apply EQ, it will cause phase shifts in some frequency regions.
- If bass and kick start clipping at any stage of mixing, the whole low end would be ruined by distorted waveform - you can't then use your headroom (loudness) properly.
- Getting a solid bass foundation is crucial, as all higher frequencies will later be added on top of that fat bass sine wave.
- If you apply compression with too fast attack and release, it will cause sound glitches as a sine wave would be cut too fast.
- If your bass is playing different notes, they will have different loudness (higher notes tend to be louder), and you'll need to control the bass notes-related volume.

So I just want to say that there are many other things to take into consideration while using these techniques. Getting a nice low end is still quite a task for myself and I wish everyone learns how to produce it properly.

what if the bass freq has same as the kick, in 44, 7hz ?

Renaxelo

i dont get the part why kick freq should be root tone, dont you have more clashing when its the same? Usually prople scoop out the bass or kick if its the same tone to make space for the other, usually in area 50-80hz

Great vid, direct and to the point. Bd and bass mixing has been a constant thorn in my side and I've had a tendency to overcompensate one way or another and have one overpowering the other/too loud/too quiet. Even as a Logic user this has helped me massively. Thumbs up and thanks
