She is the daughter of Emperor Alexios | Komnenos and is known for his famous work, "Alexiad," which chronicles the life of his father and the Byzantine period in general. 1. there were female roman emperors before komnena such as: eirene of athens, zoe and teodora of macedonian dynasty and many influential empresses-regents like teophano macedonian (empress regent for young basil 2 and constantine 8) teodora the great (wife of justinian the great) or even ulpia severina (as empress widow she runned for few months shocked roman empire after death of her husband emperor aurelian, she was first woman to sole woman at imperial throne before times of constantine the great)
2. both she and her brother john had strong support in the court and were rivalizing for power
3. anna held title of caesarissa which is female version of caesar. this was 2nd most important title in byzantium after imperial titles of vasileos/autokrator/august. caesars usually were destinated heirs to imperial rule from fall of tetrarchy to reign of alexios komnenos. at that same time john held title of sevastokrator, which was new title for imperial heir created by emperor alexios cause he favored his younger biological son than firstborn daughter and her husband (before john birth, anna was favored as heir to imperial throne)
4. its controversial if john legally took power cause he probably might've stolen the ring from dying father to proclaim himself emperor
5. anna was scheming against her brother but her plots were discovered and she failed to take the imperial throne after death of her father.
so its was not like woman bad do not fit into imperial throne (greco-romans had more advanced woman rights in comparison to western latin christians). she failed in road to power in complicated, messy and fucked up imperial system. go educate yourself before you post
