I have the same Alvin mat you are demonstrating. It's my first Alvin, but it won't be my last--it's *just* the right combination of grippiness, resilience, and resistance for me. And yes, for anyone who is working with tools or materials that can damage your work table, they are (IMO) essential, and a lot less expensive than replacing or refinishing the table! As you noted, for cutting cardboard (really, for ANY hobby knife work), cutting mats offer some safety that mat-less cutting can't.
