Japan appoints new foreign minister amid cabinet reshuffle

Japan has appointed a new foreign minister,... amid an ongoing cabinet reshuffle by the Abe administration.
Taro Kono, a former minister for administrative reform... will take up the post vacated by Fumio Kishida... who had been in the position since 2012.
Kono's first order of business... will be to coordinate closely with the United States, in light of North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats,... while also countering China's growing influence in the region.
Kishida is set to be named, the chair of a policy council... run by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party,... a step that could allow him to run for the party's leadership.
