Patch Meltdown & Spectre CPU Vulnerability Bug

The Spectre is not a easy bug to patch and you will more than likely need a BIOS firmware update, some motherboards have not released these updates yet. Also different patch will be need for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and you can find them on the link below.

How to Update your BIOS video can be found here:

This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update. To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

I followed your instructions yesterday and with a bit of lateral thinking managed to download the correct file and sorted out.  Thanks very much you're my hero. :)

thanks for your video. I have been trying to get my old dell inspiron 531 to update for the meltdown bug update for the last month and it always fails. I read a bunch of stuff online, without success. But finally after I was listening to your podcast you mentioned the windows trouble shooter. I downloaded and ran it. It found a problem. On reboot the system finally ran and after an hour of updates that had not loaded in past, I am current.
Thanks again, John

Hi Brian good vid again. I did my update today using the update from my motherboard manufacturer. after it was finished I ran the Discovery tool.GUI software and it reported back that I was no longer at risk as it had been patched. thank you for the information

Hi Brian, nice video as always. i have 2 desktops and 2 laptops at home, plus a small win10 tv box, is there anyway to just download the win10 update files to a single machine via internet, and then share them out locally via cat5 to the other machines, asking for 5 machines to d/l 400-600meg each month is a bit annoying. I have tried and set the update options to " update from more than one place - get and send updates to PC's on my local network - is ticked)

Fantastic video. I've heard in various news outlets this affects Intel CPUs only, not AMD. I have an AMD FX 8350 8 Core CPU and when I did to SpeculativeControl check I still get all red text, so to be safe I went and installed the necessary patches.

I also noticed that many of these bios microcode updates are causing all kinds of problems, from reboots to keyboard freezing and so on. What a mess, I’m just about ready to start a build and I don’t think I will be using the latest bios updates for this Gigabyte Z370 motherboard until Intel releases updates to fix buggy microcode. Many motherboard manufacturers have pulled the bios fix, but once you apply it, that’s that. Even downgrading won’t remove it I believe, I will research that.

So does KB4056892 have the necessary patch with it or do we need both KB4056892 and KB4054022?

Great Video! I have also slipstreamed that update into my iso images.

Am slightly (understatement!) confused with all this. The bug is in the CPU, so would have thought BIOS/Firmware update required? However, MS are issuing updates to take care of this, so is this just a 'plaster' to put over the bug, rather than actually solving the issue? For instance, if you have a dual boot system, is the MS update only taking care of the Windows OS, and the issue is still there if you are dual booting with Linux or Mac?

The entire video is about meltdown, but Spectre is a CPU ship problem, also to "fix" the problem you need to wait until the motherboard manufacturer release an update for it, but the problem is not gonna be entirely solved, since you're going to need to replace the entire CPU, when Intel release a new one solving the actual problem, also probably a new motherboard is coming out, but who knows....

Thanks Brian for the important info...., I have installed all updates and ran the test and found my Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H bios is still Vulnerable! will have to wait for Gigabyte to release bios update, (if they do!!)

If you have an older motherboard you might be out of luck, one of my desktop’s which runs a I7 third generation cpu is vulnerable, but the gigabyte motherboard as of today still shows no bios microcode patches. I guess it takes time for them to create them for all motherboards, but I’m a bit worried, some of these pc’s might be left in the cold.

Hmm. I tried the standalone installer, but it says it's not applicable with this computer. Probably because this Windows 10, 1709 update always show up when I check for updates, but doesn't install. I'll get there, though. lol.
