My wife and I are retired geologists. Our careers were way more interesting, challenging, and fun than most. Our peers were happy too, and now as retirees we still head for hikes in the mountains and ponder every road cut. Go for it if you want to have a great life!

Geology is one of the most general and real science there is. Sometimes there are no real or concrete answers, and that requires imaginative thinking and visualizing. It incorporates a well developed understanding of chemistry, physics, math, and other sciences (including biology - ew). It is also not just limited to oil and gas. Consultation is where most of my friends have gone after graduating - whether it be environmental or project engineering and construction. Jobs like these are much easier to get in versus academic jobs, at least from what I have seen. Geology departments in the west coast of America are relatively small so you get a chance to really know your peers and that allows you to get a better understanding of their world. Geology students also go on a lot of camping field trips - sometimes for weeks.

I am a geoscientist, and this video is pointing out some interesting facts about a geology degree. If you want to do well, you should consider getting an advanced degree. It is essential to have a strong why and have some flexibility. My geosciences degree helped me travel the world; right now, it has opened many other fantastic doors for me. I left the oil and gas industry because of the volatility, but it was fun looking for energy to meet our energy needs. Currently, I teach geology, write, speak, and run an organic farm. The earth is our only home for now, and everybody should take at least one geology course.

As a retired geologist I have to say that I could not imagine a better life. The old saying: “Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life” is absolutely true. I fell in love with geology in high school when I took an Earth Science class as a sophomore and I was lucky enough to go to a high school that actually had a dedicated Geology class which I also took. After a stint in the military thanks to Richard Nixon, I went to college. My parents wanted me to study accounting, as they felt that had the best future. But after my first year of accounting classes I quickly realized I could never be happy in a business environment. I quickly changed my major to Geology and graduated with honors. I went on to do my graduate degrees and never looked back. I have been all over the world and even had a chance to work in Antarctica. If you love the outdoors and want a extremely challenging environment I would highly recommend Geology as a career option.

Geology is not summarized by the natural gas industry. I ve been a geo for 12 years. There are hard rock geologists(mineral/metals), soft rock geology (oil and gas aka natural gas’s industry) and environmental can be included on the edge of the definition of a geologists job possibilities. If you really want to be a geologists it will include a lot of sacrifice in your personal life if you end up doing a lot of field work. But timing is everything. When the markets are bullish you can pick and choose jobs but when times are tough everyone is unemployed. Its like a game of musical chairs and when the music stops you hope you have a stable job. Bear markets can last ten years where you may never find a job. We are currently in a bull market as of June 2021. If you are a 4 th year student now is a great time to graduate.

I came to geology later in life after a 10 year career in property management and it has been nothing but good for my future.
Since I chose to walk away from my initial career path 3 years ago, I've earned my highest GPA to date, received public recognition from my university for my academic achievement in geology, scholarship awards I didn't even apply for, nearly doubled my salary (edit: and that's in the public sector. Not oil/gas/mining) and I'm not even done with my degree yet.
If you're thinking about a career in geology, for whatever reason, and you're serious about a future in the field, GO FOR IT!
Even without the recognition and scholarships it is incredibly rewarding and even if you don't end up working in the field of geology, you learn enough about other natural sciences that you can pursue many different career paths.
It is absolutely worth it.

OMG this is law of attraction at it's finest. Been watching your videos all day because I am planning to switch from mechanical engineering to earth science / geology. Omg, thank you for this !

I'm currently getting ready to choose a college to become a Geologist.I think the video was great but way to focused in the gas and petroleum niche.Of course that will be hard and risky. But first thing I did was looking in indeed for geologist and you will find so many more career paths.I have a good feeling chosing a Bachelor in geology and I will go for it 😁 I have an Associates degree in business administration and been in sales over 20 years and just had enough.I always wanted to do something different, now I'm 40 years old and a mom but hey, who cares!👍
(Sorry for my bad writing, English is not my first language lol)

Thank you very much for this video! I'm currently a 20 year old that used to think finance was what I wanted to do, but I only really desired it for the status and pay. Looking for a career path that I would want to go my whole life with, science was always where my curiosity could flow and nature always amazes me. Your video is very helpful and helps give me confidence to go back to school and turn my 2 year degree into a 4 year degree and not feel like I wasted my time and money. Thank you!!!

I really like geology and agriculture so I’m aiming to become a geologist not only for the butt ton of money to use partially for my love for farming but to also find the best place to buy land to do it as I go around the world.

To answer this question, it really depends on the person, what is worth and what isn't varies for many people. Money vs Passion.
To pick Geology as a career path depends on where you are, what resource is around you, do you want quick money, who do you look up to?
Geos can stay 24/7 in the office to being outdoor 24/7, it depends if you are in it for the money or just interest in geoscience.

I'm glad you added the bit about the cyclicity of the energy industry. While geologic studies are extremely fun (I may be just a little biased), folks should be aware of (and expect) regular layoffs.

I’m a geo. In oil. Best pay is in office jobs which most geos don’t want… oil and mining pay the best. I’d recommend to avoid enviro work as pay is low and typically co workers are not skilled with high turnover. Best advice I can give is be involved in a professional organization. Networking is crucial. Geos are tight and help each other, if nobody knows you… you’ll have difficulty breaking through. Leverage alumn networks, GSA, etc.. paid internships are hard to get except maybe in mining and oil pays internships but only with a MS. I love being a geo! It’s hard for me to find a career that pays well so keep that in mind and find your “balance” of pay and work and life. Geology is great but the only negative I see is that it’s a young persons field. If you want stable family life you’ll find an office based job and have to say goodbye to the dream of being outside all the time doing field work in remote places.

Here in South Africa geologists are always in demand, probably because the country is mineral rich and there are many mining companies.
