Mom was a seamstress of some local renown. Her tradition was to make each new child to the family a tooth pillow. It was lovely, with a poem and a little pocket for the tooth. Tooth goes in, money came out. 😊 May have been unique to our family, but perhaps not. Still, a very cute tradition.

I grew up in working class Los Angeles in the 60's. We (brother and sister) got a quarter! My dad worked in electronics and had a machine that could gold plate metal (helps prevent oxidation), so our quarters were all gold plated. We felt pretty awesome!! And I still have one!! LOL Good memories! Thank you!!

It is interesting that two of the modern references were from the Chicago area, though 80 years apart. A book and movie that came to mind and had an entertaining take on the toothfairy lore was in the Hogfather. I use to get half a dollar coin for a tooth as a kid and gave my kids a fiver.

I discovered as a kid that the Tooth Fairy looked exactly like my mom! It was so uncanny!! (She accidentally woke me up while putting the quarter under my pillow...it was the 1970s, so a quarter seemed like a lot back then...)

In The Tooth Fairy movie Dwayne Johnsons character uses his girlfriend's daughter's tooth fairy money in a poker game. He gets caught putting it back & says the tooth fairy isn't real. So he gets turned into a tooth fairy as punishment.
