One time in 5th grade I had this kind of problem and she said and I quote “make the fraction into a mixed number, add the 8, then you got 9 1/3” I was blown away of how simple it was.

To make more simple 8x3=24 then add the 4=28 and just copy the denominator 3
=28/3

I did it the way you suggested it first.

Then I realized that 4/3 equals 1 1/3.

8+1 1/3 equals 9 1/3.

Both ways work, put this other way was a lot simpler.
