I'm 53 with gray hair glasses and a cane whenever I'm carded I just smile and thank them for the compliment and show my damn ID like I'm supposed to

In some stores when the cigarette pack or carton is scanned the register will prompt for the ID. If an ID is not scanned then the only way to get beyond it is to void that item.

Some stores have a lock that literally disallows purchase without imputing either a birthday or barcode of an ID. That's probably why they cant just sell it even if the person looks over 21

Legally speaking that is correct all throughout the US. Doesn't matter if they a are 9 or 99. You have to card every time. Had a lady threaten to shank me once because of this.

Dollar General literally has a Yellow and Black card that states, “WE CARD EVERYBODY!” at their registers and people still will cuss them workers out. I just don’t get it 🤷🏽‍♀️.

That's happened to me before. I'm old enough to be amused, and maybe flattered!

A lot of systems won't even ring them up without a State issued ID number being keyed in.

Got one for you for a similar situation.

I work at a place that requires ID for alcohol and tabacco products. A man told me the products he was buying, so I told him I needed his ID. He lectures me about how he's obviously over the age needed to buy cigarettes and alcohol. I told him I still need his ID, and even turned my screen to show him. He throws his ID at me, I pick it up and tell him it expired in 2019.
He tried to use the excuse of the pandemic, and I told him I can't sell him the products without a valid form of ID. He brought up the pandemic again, called me stupid, ignorant and a few other slurs I'm not even going to go into. I put his products out of reach and ever so gently reminded him that those facilities didn't close during the pandemic. I handed his ID back him, and told him to have a good day.

Karen's. Don't matter where or who they are. They're all more than a little bit dumb. And a whole lot of entitled.

I worked at a store that i wont name (dg) and we had to id people because it was a federal law and if the county came in to do a random inspection to see if we were iding people and we were caught not iding people, the cashier would be arrested and fined and the store lost their license to sell. The store i worked at was in a small town and was behind on stocking while low staffed when the manager took over. She used some illegal tactics to get the store back on track that i wont say much about. Just that it involved me being there most of the time because i needed extra money. Because i am so different from my family and was raised in another town, most didnt realize i was related to them so i would check them out, which was against store policy.

Now to the story. On this day, i had just got thru checking out my grandmother who had bought some things for her house and cigarettes for my dad and of course i ided the 80 year old woman and she was gathering her bags up into her cart when the next customer asked for cigarettes so i, of course, asked for their id. They got mad, saying they are clearly older than the legal age and asked if i would id my own parents. I calmly told him i would do him one better. I turned to my grandma and asked "grandma dont i id you for cigarettes" to which she responds that its part of your job. This guy never gave me trouble again.

We also had this 17 year old come in who looked older with gray hair and full beard and mustache who clearly looks old enough but hes not

My parents both own liquor stores and the amount of people that flip over for IDs is so common for them. Customers don’t realize that them nor showing an ID really hurts a business that they are buying from, there’s hefty fines if ID isn’t checked

This happens all the time. Where I live, no matter the age they cannot sell alcohol or tobacco without ID. Doing so could cause the person to be fired.

It's also not policy. It's law in my state now. (for alcohol at least.)

Maybe he could take it as a compliment and be like “you really think I look that young?”

I face this all the time working in a grocery store. We have to card everyone for cigarettes and cold medicine and fireworks when they are available. Most of the time people will listen. It's the ones that dont want to and complain.

It’s ridiculous, policy or not, to ID an elderly man. He’s earned the right to not be bothered
