First Look At Rhino Linux With The Unicorn Desktop

preview_player
Показать описание
I'm taking a quick first look at Rhino Linux, which just released it's first ISO. Rhino Linux is a rolling release Ubuntu-based distro that features a beautiful Xfce-based desktop. It also contains its own package manager wrapper that can install packages from apt, flatpak, snap or pacstall (an AUR-styled community repo for Ubuntu/Debian).

AJ Here. Desktop Lead for Rhino Linux.

So two key things I want to mention: You installed the Distrotube-dmenu package and had issues, unfortunately that package was not updated on Pacstall for a while but the lead developer of Pacstall seems to have sorted it now.

As for the Linux kernel version update. We actually shipped that recently and so when you started recording you likely didn’t have a package update, and then we shipped it and you got it immediately which is quite good timing 🎉

Great video as always ❤

Many thanks,
AJ

2:52 i cried tears of joy as the 50 millionth distro review with a graphic live environment that I've seen done didn't involve immediately changing the screen resolution lol.

The top panel in Xfce is used for worskpaces, so on small screens (i.e. laptops) the top bar is not enough for quick launch content: openned windows and busy workspaces eat it uo pretty quickly. There is also option at Xfce to automatically hide dock on mouse leave.

The fact that the run launcher is Super+S makes a lot of sense to me, actually. That's what I use to open rofi.

Why?
1. S for Search. I'm searching for the app to launch
2. It's on one side purposefully. I can do it easily with one hand which is useful if I'm doing something with the mouse but want to suddenly open a new window

One handed convenience cannot be understated. It's why I close windows with Super+X too. So much faster.

-dev packages don't need to be installed for programs to run, so you can safely remove them after building your package.

really wish Nala came by default on distros instead of apt. Looks so much better and I believe it even handled package downloading/installing a lot more efficiently?

Obie Wan Derek… can you explain why so many Ubuntu derivatives write only Ubuntu into the boot menu and some will write the actual Distros name ? This kills me because I am a compulsive Distros hopper! Thank you for your great videos !

Oh, yay. Another DE, Linux absolutely needed that. The same people wondering when the year of the Linux desktop will be are the same people keeping the masses away. But whatever, so excited for another disto, I was getting bored with the hundreds I'll never touch.

The *-dev packages on Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions are not the main dependencies themselves, but the stuff needed to compile against those dependencies, such as headers and other related stuff. On Arch these are usually included in the main package. I'm quite curious why Debian/Ubuntu has it like this

Looks good, I wish the default look was a bit more neutral. That harsh neon purple icons are a bit eye-burning

I regret that while this Linux version was created by serious developers, I will have to skip its installation on my computer. Let me explain.

Ubuntu is a distribution that is based on Debian. From my recent installation of Debian 12, which is the mother of a great many others, I have xfce therein.

I do use Debian's xfce and it works for me.
My using xfce is for my heavy use of terminal mode for writing and compiling code.

There are many good features provided by Rhino. If I have to reinstall Linux, following your presentation listing the interesting useful features you demonstrated I will install Rhino.
Thanks DT

3:35 as a mac user that actually makes me feel right at home with both a status bar type thing at the top that only holds constantly used items like the current date/time, and a uh like fatter bar that's either near the bottom or one of the sides that holds basically the favorited apps. but really, i'd rather have just the status bar at the top, completely get rid of the other bar, and have something like dmenu or rofi, with stylings/functionality closer to the Spotlight Search on mac. (which i might add is quite nice.. thoe definitely something *faster* than that would be nice though lol the spotlight indexer is so friggin slow.)

Those were dev packages usually they are not required at runtime. They are just required to build softwares that depends on them.

At 12:14 is an easy way to tell its xfce, open the file manager and the window decoration gets rendered first and then the contents of the window gets filled in afterwards, very sloppy looking in my opinion.

10:15 - The keybinding for ulauncher is shown in a popup every time you log in to the machine.

These sort of things excite me, but then once I get into their repos to try and install stuff and hit all sorts of problems, well then I'm not so excited anymore. OTOH, as shown here, there are quite a number of aspects of this new distro that look worth trying. So I'm going to try it on a fairly new Intel NUC mini-pc.

Man, I've been looking for something Like rhino-pkg, now I know it can actually exist in a good state, I hope someone does something similar for Arch.

cool stuff. might have to check this one out and go through it in a VM.

This made XFCE look just like GNOME. Got me fooled. Neat.
