Rhipsalis elliptica Houseplant Care — 198 of 365

You may notice the standout planter more than the plant itself, so I might as well tell you that the planter is a boobie pot from Rosegrown. And the plant in it is a jungle cactus known as Rhipsalis elliptica, which takes the #198 spot of "365 Days of Plants".

In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.

You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Featured plant:
Rhipsalis elliptica

I have a cutting from one, it has taken months for it to form roots. Now knowing how to move somewhat forward, with rocky barky type soil, and not lots of bright light is a bonus and then some. Thank you Summer.

I found one of these in just a big box store succulent assortment. I'd never seen it before, and it was just labelled as "rhipsalis" with no variety, it took a while to figure out which one it was. Mine seems like super happy. Growing in a clay pot, in an orchid/cactus soil mix. I keep it in fairly bright indirect light. Once it got settled in it was really growing nicely.

I just purchased this plant 4 days ago, from a local nursery (yes, social distancing practiced during exchange). Absolutely beautiful. Its large and in charge. It has definitely help to ease some quarantine stress.

I have one that I got free from a succulent swap table. I grow it outdoors in San Diego, CA. It turned red and almost died in a part sun environment. I moved it to full shade in a hanging pot and it's thriving now.

Wow, I have this Rhipsalis, high on a shelf about 7 feet away from a west facing window, I have it in a very airy cactus mixture, it seem to like where it is at the moment, it's been here for a year at least. Thanks Summer, love that I always learn something new about a plant I actually have. See you tomorrow.

I was lucky enough to find this plant about 18 months ago in a nursery near me (France) it was a very poor looking plant, and quite costly, but i knew it would grow new leaves to replace the battered ones... Not only has the parent plant grown beautifully, every cutting (ok leaf !) i took off has rooted... I now have more cuttings than I know what to do with! Its growing in my normal very well draining soil (lots of pumice) and is in a south window but under another huge mistletoe cactus, which doesn't seem to mind the winter sun.... It is also screened at the moment by a tree, but the leaves will be falling soon, so i will be keeping an eye on light levels. The cuttings have all rooted in water, and have transfered to soil/pumice mix easily. She has also flowered and fruited since I've had her, the white flowers form along the sides of the leaves and are SO delicate. Hope this helps someone. (I am selling off the cuttings on ebay.)

I have the most beautiful Rhipsalis ( of some sort ) that I found thrown out on the curb by someone while walking my dog. It was halfway out of the plastic nursery pot it had been in, lying on its side. Someone had actually written on one of the stems with a sharpie saying what kind of flowers it would produce! I was appalled for the poor thing, and rescued it of course. I cut away the ink portion, and repotted it in a larger planter. This was last spring, and since then it has taken off - sprouting new, long growth on every stem, ( including the one I cut the ink off of)! It has become so tall and beautiful! I keep it outside in bright, indirect light on my porch in California.

I started to love rhipsalis from watching your videos. There's so many kinds of them. My aunt gave me a rhipsalis pilocarpa (not sure about the spelling) and I love it. I started collecting plants again because of you.

Wonderful plant, reminds me of my childhood when my grandmother had a huge vase. Ivory flowers, small and fragrant and then small fruits like pink pearls. I grow mine with tree bark mixed with coconut bran and decayed leaves.

I have a large one. I've had it for years but only learned the name of it this week. Mine is very purple/coppery colored. From what I've read this week I know that this color is the result of having it in a sunny outdoor location (in New Orleans). It is blooming now 12/2022. I grow it in potting soil.

Hi! Australian here! I see Eliptica in nurseries quite a bit now. I have one (as well as several others, also pretty readily available, at least in my area), and love it (not surprisingly because I'm such a rhipsalis/jungle cactus head)!

I love Jungle Cactus. E. Oxypetalum has been in my life since early childhood...my plants mother plant was my parents. They are so easy to grow, but tricky to get to bloom. I will check back to see if anyone can source this cutie-pie.

All of mine looove living in my east-facing windows. I have such a hard time telling the difference between rhipsalis. I have a pachyptera; which looks very similar. Since I got all of mine as juvenile plants, I'm wondering about root systems and when/if these will show signs of needing re-potting(?)

I bought one yesterday and to my dismay, a leaf broke off while transportation. Hence, I am here to hopefully get tips for propagation 😀

Hi summer, would you be interested in talking about the plant called "purple passion, " or Gynura Aurantiaca? I am interested in buying one but wanted to hear from you about the plant. Are you familiar with this particular plant?

By the way, i love your videos. Thanks for all of the tips.
