In this series, our Norton Application Engineer Paul Gray answers lots of common questions, from safety to product performance and much more . There's no question too big or too small, so if you have a question that will challenge Paul, drop it in the comments box below!

So, why is the flange nut on an angle grinder a different shape on each side, and what is each side used for? The answer is simple! The raised side is used with grinding discs, screwed onto the grinder raised side down and the flat side is used with cutting discs, with the flat side screwed onto the grinder. It's important not to confuse the two as this can lead to dangerous disc breakage.

Thank you so much! I'm new using this tool, was confused about how to use this flange with each side. Your video really helped me understand this and I really appreciate it! Thank you!

Thanks a lot for this. Saved me a trip to return the flap disc I just bought and looking like a knob

When using a flat cutting disc shouldn't you be using a Type 1 guard to protect from flying debris, together with an unthreaded Type 1 flange to keep a flexing wheel from getting too close to the guard and shattering?

Why do skill blades have a trapezoid piece in the middle. It breaks out very easily, what do I use to tighten and 'center' the blade? thank you.
