The US government is growing increasingly concerned that giant Chinese-made cranes operating in American ports could give Beijing a possible spying tool. The concern stems from the cranes being fitted with sophisticated sensors that can register and track the provenance and destination of containers. The 850 billion dollar defense bill passed in December last year requires a study by the end of this year on whether foreign-manufactured cranes pose cybersecurity or national-security threats at American ports. Officials are concerned that the cranes could also provide remote access for those looking to disrupt the flow of goods.
