The Argentines had a really interesting navy. Heck, the three powers had a fascinating series of ships, with some really interesting modifications for local conditions and costs.

Italian designed warships are just so "bella" - they look like they're meant to fight one day and win a racing regatta the next.

"Whatever happened, they would at least look really good."
Italian naval design in a nutshell.

As an interesting side note of their service, the Almirante Brown, while in line ahead of the American built battleship Moreno, accidentally collided with the British built destroyer Corrientes while in fog on October of 1941. Corrientes would eventually go down with eight lives lost, and there is a photograph of the ship buckled amidships where Almirante Brown struck, shortly before the sinking. If memory serves right there was significant efforts of the crew to save her and, partially thanks to this, many more lives were saved.

When I told my US Navy for 30 years father about this ship, his response was, "I wouldn't want to be on a ship with the word 'sinko' in it."

The naval history of South America in the early to mid 20th century is a fascinating topic

Following WWII it must have been a fire sail for used tin cans, and light cruisers.
I'd like to hear about surplus vessels bought and used commercially after the war.
There has to be some interesting stories out there.

You're correct, the Italians do design good looking ships.
Who attacked the ship off the coast of Spain?

The USS phoenix would be renamed again to the admiral Belgrano. Which the British would sink in 1982

"ARA Veinticinco de Mayo" Is this a re-run? Oh, no, this is a different episode. It's just the only thing Argentina names anything.
Go down Veinticinco de Mayo blvd to Veinticinco de Mayo street to check out Veinticinco de Mayo where you can get the Veinticinco de Mayo burger before you head down to the docks on the Veinticinco de Mayo bus line to visit the Veinticinco de Mayo.

I just love the Italian style turrets, with the guns really close together. Just very clean looking.

I remember the 25th of May as the carrier that, very sensibly, RTB'ed from the Falklands arena immediately after the loss of Belgrano. I understand that when she retired from active service 8 years later she was used to provide parts to her sister ship (ex-HMS Vengence) that remained in service with Brazil. That at least showed that relations bewteen the two countries must have thawed a little since I was operating around there in the '80s.
