Recording a whole song with an SM58 on Cassette // Tascam 688

Trying to simplify my recording process on the Tascam 688 cassette recorder. I enjoy it more when it's simple. I was always worried about the sound quality going from condenser mic's on acoustic guitars to an SM58, but I like the results. Let me know if you do too.

Another key part of this is the WEM Copicat tape echo, which brings the vibe as always. It's on the guitar and organ to create a stereo effect and recorded as a slap-back on the vocals in mono (I tried to do a wet/dry signal with it but I messed it up, so it's mono).

I respect that you know when to stop. That's maybe one of the most difficult things to master and the main reason I struggle to finish my songs.

Really enjoyed this - for me the killer is that guitar sound, so dead and dry but then the verb/delay extends it without washing it out. Lovely!

My god, . That guitar through the tape echo was absolutely heavenly. I could listen to just that all day by itself.

The sheer creativity and beauty of simplicity. God, this is incredible. This exact vibe and message is what I strive for in my videos. Incredible work man.

Very Nice.
Yep. That is how we recorded music back in the 1900s. I remember this, because I am from the age of tape. Even with the noise floor, there is a warmth and dimension present on a taped recording.

I absolutely love this! Your vocal sound with that short slapback delay is incredible. Thanks for sharing the process.

Great job. I grew up with a cassette multitrack and I'm never going back, but I respect that it holds an old-school fascination. The delay is wonderful and the £4 guitar is one hell of a find!

Hey Will, this is an awesome rockumentary/mix video. Love how you’ve broken down your process and approach to recording. The quality and clarity in your song writing really shines through with the paired down arrangement too. Top stuff man! 🙌👌

Very inspiring! I have a TOA 8-track cassette deck and I've only done one project with it so far. I love how simple but rich this ended up.

Really nice man! Love those empty spaces you leave in your music. It lets the melodies and lyrics hang in there so you can truly absorbe them

Hell yeah! This is fabulous. Love the sound of those tape machines. I had a 4 track tasam and it sounds fat and juicy. You’ve inspired me to do it again. Thank you. 👍

I enjoyed this video a lot, it has a great style. I also like this method of making music with no DAWs and screens. Thanks for sharing.
