The story behind Venice Carnival masks is fascinating! In this travel video I help you discover the art of Venice mask making.

The Venice carnival started as a cultural celebration—a chance for everyone in the city of Venice to be on an equal level—regardless of how rich or poor they were.

Unfortunately, the party had to end for hundreds of years. But, the city of Venice brought the festival and tradition back in the 1980s!

We visit the world-famous Ca' Macana workshop who has kept the ancient tradition of mask making alive. These handmade works of art are simply amazing. They even made all the masks seen in the Hollywood film Eyes Wide Shut starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman!

Be sure to check out this family owned workshop below!

I really love the aesthetic of Venetian masks. There’s something so haunting and spookily beautiful, even trippy about them. Does this visual style/aesthetic have a name, or like is it inspired by some particular school and/or era of art?

Yeah technically speaking, making those masks is kinda easy.
Everyone can do it. But after the simple process of "making the mask", one must also put in his skills, arts, love and passion.

Italy have a long tradition of masks.
Not just Venice, but also Neapolitans, Sardinians and Romans had their own traditional Masks.

Some are ugly and terryfing, others are comical and hilarious, all fashinating.

Have you ever seen Pulcinella? The typical folkloristic mask of Neapolis? That was cool too.
