A HUGE MISTAKE - Catan World Championship 2018 Finals Analysis

Today I analyze the 2018 Settlers of Catan World Championship Finals match where we see huge mistakes that severely impact the game. This Catan World Championship board has relatively high ore and wheat which puts the 4th position at a disadvantage. Let's see how each of these National Catan champions place their settlements.

In this video, I provide 2 Catan strategy tips that are critical to success in the Settlers of Catan.

Tip #1 is essential to success in Catan as it increases your awareness and leads to more trades. In addition, if you use this tip you will have a better chance at stealing opponents' trades or table talking them down to prevent opponents from trading.

Tip #2 is critical to know on boards where there are high wood and brick especially. Using this strategy tip will let you get immense value if utilized correctly. It is also very beneficial for a race to be extended as your opponents will keep on robbing each other! Make sure to get in some good value trades while using tip #2!

I still would pick 9-12 every day. The only thing I regret is that I bought two dev cards at some point when I should have built a city – and actually made a rookie mistake by paying for both at once instead of one at a time.

What one or two guys mention in the comment is that you totally forgot about that ore port. Imo it makes up for the lack of brick and made me comfortable I would have won the race against Quetzal. I also predicted that he only would try to compete for that sheep if he had all 6 resources needed in one turn. Else he would have pointed his third road elsewhere, going for the grain- or a 3:1-port. And as you point out yourself somewhere around 14:00 It would be “most likely that white wins the race.”

It was a gamble and it didn`t pay off. But if you want to compete at this level you must take chances sometimes. And that could be another lesson to some of the people here, who are arguing about the poor decisions in this game and the “poor players”. I played 1000+ games IRL. Of Markus (red) I know that it was his second Worldcup! And he qualified in Germany! So relax a little please if you haven’t yet played with 50+ people around a table watching your steps 😉

I think blue just got caught up in the excitement. Sitting at home, thinking about this logically, yeah the 4-5-11 is clearly far superior. But in the heat of the moment, with the crowd egging him on, I reckon he just couldn't resist the allure of the 6-11-12.

Man, Markus really had a tough position to place as pos 4 this game.

3 strong spots and then there's just nothing good left. Still he made the best of it. Must be super frustrating to be handed such a shitty position and then see your opponents completely mess up their placements.

As 4th position, I would lock down the 9 wheat by placing on the 2/9/10 (road to the 6 wood) and the 3/4/9 (road to the 8 ore).

1. Racing for the brick port is unwise, as you're last to roll. You explained well all the ways you lose the race.
2. It is unlikely that the other players settle on the 8/3 coast. Everyone is already on an 8 ore!
3. This sets you up for a mediocre road game.
4. With the 5/9 wood tiles, it is unlikely both coastal 6 wood spots get taken. This means you can wait a bit to settle on the 6 wood, since your placements section off the top left side.
5. The 8/3 + 3:1 port is a MONSTER 3rd settlement spot. Allowing a road player to get up cities quickly, which can be hard. Early cities makes up for your low early production.
6. Lots of open settlement spots on the coast, great for a road player.
7. Strong wheat to trade with blue, by locking them out of the 9 wheat.
8. Sharing the 8/3 with white may help keep the robber off the 8 ore in the mid to late game.

Mediocre sheep and brick? Kinda bad, for a road player. But better brick than Orange and White.

Weaknesses
1. No wood outside of the starting road in hand, which is VERY vulnerable to the robber. Low wood makes the early to mid game tough.
2. If anyone places on the 6 wood, this position loses half its strengths.
3. Blue is poised to play a strong road game and has stronger production early, making it possible they snowball faster than you can catch up.
4. Total of 17 "dots" worth of starting production. That's weak to average starting production.
5. Someone could take the 8/3 and you basically lose the game.
6. Poor city quality.
7. Building a city on the 8 ore in the mid game will attract the robber. This setup needs cities to make up for low production.
8. Allows white access to a 6 sheep spot, putting them in a great spot to play OWS. You won't be building lots of dev cards, so its up to the other players to contest them.
