Oh man, this song was *everywhere* when it was released. People couldn't get enough of it. There was just something so charming about the aesthetic they presented in the video. I kinda saw it as a parody of the previous era's "I'm so rich" rapper stylings.

In addition to being catchy as hell, I think people really vibed with the way this song said, "Hey, just because you don't have money for expensive shit, that doesn't mean you can't dress outlandishly and feel awesome while doing it." Too many songs equate confidence and coolness with money, and this song deliberately flew in the opposite direction as hard as it could. :)

I think this might of been one of the most important songs culturally for that year. Convincing the poor or the middle class that they are inferior for not wearing some brand and getting them to waste money that could be actually improving thier lives is a travesty. As someone who grew up dirt poor this was the best feeling.

The song “Otherside” shows off his serious side as an artist. After experiencing the fun of thrift shop it might be interesting to listen to one of his deeper songs. “Same Love” and “wing$” also good serious ones by him. If you’re looking to get weird and have fun, “and we danced.”

Any culture that pushes (some % from corporation, some % from inside the culture) the requirement of $50 t-shirts and a vast/expensive sneaker collection to considered accepted is a serious problem. And holding up a mirror to that absurdity with an opposite absurdity is a brilliant(and fun) way to bring attention to and provide some modicum of solution to that serious problem.

I’m so glad you reacted to this. Thrift Shop was an absolute classic in the early 2010s for many especially in the gaming world. Brings back memories every time I hear it
